A bit more work done

Over the past week or so some more minor work has been done to Vicky. As the paint used has been an acryllic enamel of sorts, all parts painted to date have been left to dry good and hard. The last couple of days a few parts here and there have been sanded down with wet-n-dry paper to get ready for the next coat. There have been some runs so those will be all taken care of prior to the next coat. Also, today it was decided to try and take the cranckcase bearings out. But instead of the old tried and true method of bunging the cases in the oven to roast for a wee bit, something else was tried. A heat gun from Home Depot was used to locally heat the areas where the bearings lived. A few minutes and some taps with a BFH and an appropriate sized socket did the trick. While Bodger was on a roll, the long cylinder studs were replaced as one had a slight bend near the threads at the top. Figured just replace them all and be done with it. The dishwasher was employed to do some cranckcase washing. Put one half in, used some dish soap, turned it on, went aboot doing something important like watching a movie while it went through the cycles. BIG MISTAKE!!!! Don't think the dishwasher had been used in quite some time along with maybe a little too much dish soap as the floor was covered in soap suds. Thought the place had gone Titanic at first but it wasn't as bad as it looked. But in future will clean things the old fashioned way by using plenty of grease, steel wool and brake cleaner, More rubbing down of painted parts will carry on while it's cool right now and the second coat applied when it warms up some before it really gets cold here. We just had a cold front move in from somewhere which dropped temps down fron the high 80s mid 90s to in the mid 50s these past few days. Loved it, but not good for painting things in a garage as it tends to have an effect on the paint and it's drying. Also went to a local Oktobeerfest a few miles away along with a wine fest in another town so teri and Bodger both could relax and unwind from the stresses of the salt mines we both are obliged to toil at. Ah well, work continues.

  1. Can't remember where I saw it recently, while 'blog-hopping'...but someone else was brush painting, and finish coating with a spray can. My brother used to use refillable spray cans. I don't remember if he had to get them filled at a paint store or if he had some system where he was able to fill and charge up himself. The system you are using with rubbing down 'tween coats will probably be just fine. A final polish out with a fine compound and wax will probably shine it right up.
Bought a 'Cycle World' mag today. Haven't been buying them lately, but wanted to check out the new Honda 700 twin that has potential for up to 80 MPG. If it wasn't for Peter Egan and Kevin Cameron's (sp?) commentaries I'd probably not buy it all. In his column, Egan was talking about his newest project bike, a BSA 441. Hope they allow him to feature it a bit in the magazine.

  2. I'll give it a light sanding, another coat and then a rub down with some polishing compound and hopefully that'll do it.

The compenents like the horn etc will get another coat and that's it I think.

May have to check out "CW" to see about this project. Haven't looked that or the other US mags as there's nothing of interest reall, other than that Motorcycle Classics

How's you Victor coming along Larry?

    1. Welllll...was in the shed here trying to make sense of whats out there. Found some boxes containing transmission bits, another with clutch parts. Really wished I hadn't taken the engine to bits all those years ago. After several moves and more years than I care to remember...things are a bit scattered.Oh yeah, rats got into the gaskets...will be replacing those. At least my rolling chassis is more or less as it was when the engine and tank were pulled off. Hopefully I'll be getting some pics taken and up on the blog soon. Life's been busy, as usual. Have got my CB-550 Honda fired up and will be bloggin about it soon. Peter Egan has a CB-550, a newerish Triumph twin, and now the 441. I sometimes think about a newer Triumph, but then I remember how many projects I already have. I better stay out of the showrooms....
