A conundrum

While trawling through eBay looking for parts I ran across a couple that caught my eye. Upon closer inspection Bodger noticed something a bit off with one.

Namely on the swing arm....seems that there should be two mounting points for the chainguard, one at the swing arm pivot and the other about 3/4 ways back.

This is seen on the one for sale, but NOT on Vicky....there's a small lug on the bottom for the rear brake hub plate thingy, but not to secure the chainguard. Have a look at the pics:

As can be seen, the chainguard is secured to the top lug on the swing arm, this one from my wee Starfire....the pic for Vicky's swing arm didn't come out but the top lug is missing. It isn't broken or cut off, it just isn't there which is the reason for the query.

Has anyone with a B44VS seen this before, a swing arm sans rear chainguard mounting lug or is there a wee problem here?

Inquiring minds want to know, especially mine!!!!!!!

Thoughts on this please....

Extra, Extra....read the latest news......

Apparently after doing some Sherlock Holmes sleuthing type of stuff (OK, I asked for info on the BSA Forum, not the BSAOC, but on Yahoo)....anyway, a couple of responses have opined that in 69, the swing arm and chainguard was changed a wee bit....making interchangeability between some years difficult.

So this explains why things didn't look quite kosher with the swing arms bewteen Amelia and Vicky.

So it pays to investigate before going off half cocked and buying something on a whim....chceck yer stuff first before departing with yer hard earned!

  1. I don't know much about BSAs, but I did a quick search and found this picture: http://www.cyclechaos.com/wiki/File:1970-BSA-B44-Victor-Sport-Yellow-1064-7.jpg
A different chainguard with a different mount! This is probably going to confuse you more!

  2. Found this on British Ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BSA-B25-B44-swinging-arm-1969-70-NOS-/200645681338?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item2eb76a20ba
Looks like BSA changed the guard mount at some point. Curiouser and curiouser.

  3. Curiouser and curiouser indeed Norman....and Kawa brought up a point about a possible competition model.

    The plot thickens!

  4. Hey Bodger , got your e-mail about all this and I see it here....I'll try to get to my Victor in storage and see what it says... Also I have a spare frame and swing arm that might be in the garage at home...I'll have a look-see at it, if it is indeed in there. Can't conjure up a reasonable mental picture...been too long since I've seen either. Yeah possibly it was cut off to lighten it up for competition usage...? I'll get back to you. Somewhere it seems I saw an on-line manual,I'll see if I book-marked it.

  5. Cool.....the lug in question wasn't cut off, was never there on top of the arm, just on the bottom for the brake arm thingy.

Kawa thinks possibly not there due to competition.

And a guy on a BSA forum reckons there might be different swing arms over the years. Says that the mounting on some later ones were at the mounting where the bottom of the rear shock is.

I got some pics of the rear shocks, and afew other things for ya to see; will get the fenders taken later after batteries are charged up.

  6. Big D's Cycle out your way had some on-line stuff, but it was for Triumph and Norton.Went on an on-line search...couldn't find out anything...but did grab some neat pics of Victors here and there. I'll check the garage tonight, and maybe in a day or two get back to you with what I find out. I was kind of surprised I couldn't find a diagram of a Victor frame/and or swingarm on-line...maybe Kawa knows of a place to go to...?

  7. Had a look see at "Vickys" swing arm and pics of "Amelias" swing arm and there is a difference.

"Amelia" has the mouting point on the lug like in the pic above and "Vicky" has a couple of holes near the lower shock mount.

So it's try and find a chainguard that has mounts like that OR I try and get the one on eBay and stick it on "Amelia" while swpping the one on "Amelia" and putting it on "Vicky."

That may require some repositioning of the rear bracket, but that's OK, the guard is off a B50 so whadda I care????
